CASA by the Lakes will host the annual Fun Walk/Run and Chili Challenge on October 25  at Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park. The theme for this year’s event is Cowboys vs. Robots. The public is invited to pick a side, dress the part, and take a stand against child abuse by walking or running across the Kentucky Dam and voting in the highly competitive chili cook-off!  Registration for the Cowboy vs. Robots Fun Walk/Run begins October 25 at 10:00 A.M. at the Kentucky Dam Village Beach parking lot.  Registration costs $10 per participant; children, ages 10 and under, may participate for $5. The Walk/Run begins at 10:30 A.M.  Following the Fun Walk/Run, participants are invited to attend the annual CASA Chili Challenge at the Kentucky Dam Village State Park Lakeview Pavilion. Doors open at 12:00 PM with the event lasting until 2:00 P.M. A $5 suggested donation is requested per bowl. Each $5 donation also receives one “Crowd Favorite” vote. Each additional “Crowd Favorite” votes may be purchased for $1 each. 

Plan to Be Tobacco Free with Jamie Smith of the Kentucky Cancer Program on Thursday, October 16 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the MCCH Center for Health and Wellness. Smith will be presenting a free session to teach people how to be smoke free. The class will address addiction, behaviors and available resources, and will help smokers develop a quit plan. All tobacco users and non-tobacco users who would like to learn more are welcome. Pre-registration is required! For more information or to register, call Jamie Smith at 270-442-1310. Future dates for this program Monday, November 17 (2-3 p.m.) and Monday, December 15 (4:30-5:30 p.m.).

Looking ahead, an AARP Safe Driving Class will be held Wednesday, November 5 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the MCCH Center for Health and Wellness. Kentucky insurances must offer a discount to those who complete the class. Pre-registration is required and the class size is limited. Tuesday, October 28 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Weaks Senior Citizen Center, 607 Poplar Street, Murray – Blood Pressure and Osteoporosis Heel Scan screenings.

Thursday, October 30 from 6-9 a.m. at the Spring Creek Station #3 Dining Room, 1401 South 16th Street, Murray – Cholesterol, Blood Sugar (finger stick) and PSA screenings 12-hour fast required, drinking water is okay. 

Friday, October 31 from 6-9 a.m. at the Center for Health and Wellness, 716 Poplar Street, Murray – Cholesterol, Blood Sugar (finger stick) and PSA screenings 12-hour fast required, drinking water is okay.

SUPPORT GROUPS
The Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet Tuesday, October 14 at 5 p.m. at Shared Care located in the George Weaks Community Center.  For more information, call Connie Stalls, LPN, at (270) 753-0576.

A newly-formed Alzheimer’s and Other Dementia Caregivers Support Group will meet Thursday, October 16 from 10-11 a.m. in the Yellow Room of the Murray Senior Center at 607 Poplar Street. This newly-formed support group will meet the 3rd Thursday of each month and is designed for caregivers of people with any type of dementia. The group is based on the Best Friends™ model which is "what persons with Alzheimer's disease need most is a friend, a 'best friend' who will provide loving care, accept their illness, and learn what we call the 'knack' of caregiving." The Breast Cancer Support Group will meet Tuesday, October 28 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Center for Health and Wellness.  For more information, contact Evelyn Wallis at (270) 489-2462.

The Mental Illness (NAMI) Support Group for families and friends of persons suffering from mental illness will meet Thursday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the MCCH Educational Services Building located on the corner of 8th and Elm streets. For more information, call 270-748-6133.
